What I Learned from Burnout: Building a Business That Actually Works

Before I had my son, I ran a thriving bookkeeping practice.

From the outside, everything looked like it was working:

  • A steady stream of clients
  • Consistent income
  • A calendar packed with work

But behind the scenes? I was exhausted.

I was working late most nights, squeezing in tasks between client calls, and spending more time knee-deep in Xero than I was with friends, family… or myself.

I didn’t have a child yet, but my time was still completely consumed. And the hardest part? I had built the exact business I thought I was supposed to want – and yet it didn’t feel like mine anymore.

There was one moment I’ll never forget – sitting at my desk, emails piling up, dinner still in the fridge untouched, and just this wave of what am I even doing anymore?
I realised: I’d created a business that was functional, but not fulfilling.

When the Business You Built Doesn’t Fit Anymore

This season – the one that nearly broke me – didn’t come from a dramatic collapse. It came from a slow erosion. The kind that sneaks in when you’re too busy to notice your boundaries slipping.

I’d been chasing growth without asking whether it was the right kind of growth.

And I don’t think I’m alone in that.

Maybe you’ve felt it too – that quiet question:
“Is this really how it has to be?”

The Biggest Shift? Permission to Do It Differently

It wasn’t until I stepped away from that business (and stepped into motherhood) that I truly began to see things clearly.

Becoming a mum changed everything.

Suddenly, I wasn’t just building for “success.”
I was building for life – one where I could be present, have space to breathe, and still create meaningful impact.

It gave me the clarity I needed to finally ask:
What actually works for me?

And here’s what I discovered:

  • Systems matter – but they need to be built for your real life, not an idealised version of it.
  • Simplicity is powerful – more doesn’t always mean better.
  • Your energy is your most valuable resource – spend it wisely.

From Bookkeeping to Building a Better Way

Those hard-earned lessons became the foundation for what I do now. Coaching, strategy, systems – all through the lens of making business work for your life, not the other way around.

Because I’ve lived the hustle.
I’ve chased the full calendar.
And I know how easy it is to end up burnt out, even when everything looks “successful.”

That season didn’t break me – but it came close.

And I’m grateful for it now, because it gave me a filter I use in everything I do:

Does this make my life feel lighter or heavier?

If it feels heavy – we pause.
If it feels aligned – we go.

What I Want You To Know

If you’re in a season where business feels hard…
If you’re trying to make the hours stretch, or make your passion feel profitable, or just get through the day without dropping the ball –

You’re not alone.
You’re not doing it wrong.
And you don’t need to do more to feel better.

Sometimes the answer isn’t pushing harder – it’s making a different plan.

One that gives you your time back.
One that prioritises your peace.
One that works with you, not against you.

A Little Encouragement Before You Go

Maybe this isn’t your forever business.
Maybe it is – but it needs a new shape.
Maybe you’re just trying to keep the wheels turning for now – and that’s okay too.

But wherever you are, I want you to know this:

You’re allowed to do it differently.
You’re allowed to slow down.
You’re allowed to choose what works for you – even if it’s not what the business books recommend.

If you’re in a season that feels hard right now – I see you. And I promise, there’s another way.

Meet Lauren

I help women step into their CEO era with systems, structure, and strategy that actually work.

I’ve been in business for over 20 years, which means I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the downright exhausting side of entrepreneurship. At 24, I built a half-million-dollar company that looked “successful” on the outside but left me burnt out and questioning everything.

Now? I’ve made it my mission to help women avoid that trap - and instead build businesses that are profitable, sustainable, and give them more freedom, not less.

I’m also a mum (after four rounds of IVF and one very determined little boy), a podcaster, and someone who believes Sundays should be for family, not for catching up on work.

Around here, you’ll find a mix of strategy, systems, AI magic, and honesty - because scaling doesn’t have to feel so damn heavy.

If you’re ready to stop “doing it all” and start running your business like the CEO you were meant to be, you’re in the right place.

Making business growth easier (and way more fun) with freedom-first strategy, smart systems, and real talk - no fluff.
